Cam Newton rejoining New England Patriots on 1-year deal

March 12 (UPI) — Three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Cam Newton is returning to the New England Patriots on another short-term contract.

League sources told ESPN, NFL Media and the Boston Globe on Friday that Newton agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $ 13.6 million with the Patriots. According to the outlets, about $ 6 million of the agreement is tied to incentives.

Later Friday, Newton confirmed his return to the Patriots with a post on Instagram. The video had a caption that read in part, “Run it back!! Chapter 2.”

The 31-year-old Newton, who inked a one-year deal with the Patriots in July, said last month he hoped to return to New England.

“I’m getting tired of changing [teams],” Newton said on the I Am Athlete podcast. “I am at a point in my career where I know way more than I did last year. Yes, I would go back.”

In the 2020 season, Newton completed 65.8% of his passes for 2,657 passing yards. He tossed eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions, adding 592 yards and 12 scores on the ground.

The Patriots posted a 7-8 record with Newton under center and finished with a 7-9 overall mark, missing the playoffs for the first time since the 2008 campaign.

Before joining the Patriots, Newton spent nine seasons with the Carolina Panthers. He was the NFL’s Most Valuable Player in 2015.
