Kansas City Royals signing 3B Hunter Dozier to 4-year extension

Feb. 28 (UPI) — The Kansas City Royals are finalizing a multiyear contract extension with third baseman Hunter Dozier.

League sources told ESPN and MLB Media on Sunday that Dozier and the Royals are in agreement on a four-year, $ 25 million extension that includes a fifth-year option for $ 10 million. According to the outlets, the deal also contains escalators and bonuses that could max it out at $ 49 million over five years.

The Royals haven’t confirmed the agreement, which is pending a physical.

Dozier, who was selected eighth overall by the Royals in the 2013 MLB Draft, is an integral part of Kansas City’s lineup. He is expected to serve as the Royals’ everyday third baseman this season after previously moving around the infield and outfield.

The 29-year-old Dozier missed the start of last season after testing positive for COVID-19. In 44 games last year, he recorded a .228 batting average with six home runs and 12 RBIs.

Dozier had a breakthrough 2019 campaign in which he belted 26 home runs and tied for the American League lead in triples with 10. He also ranked second on the Royals in RBIs (84) that year.

Earlier this off-season, the Royals acquired outfielder Andrew Benintendi in a trade with the Boston Red Sox. Kansas City also signed veteran first baseman Carlos Santana to a two-year pact.
